EUROPEAN TOURISM ACADEMY COVID-19 SAFE UNIVERSITY DESIGNATION KEY MESSAGES AND ACTIONS

EUROPEAN TOURISM ACADEMY COVID-19 SAFE UNIVERSITY DESIGNATION KEY MESSAGES AND ACTIONS

European Tourism Academy has launched the COVID-19 SAFE UNIVERSITY/ CERTIFIED EDUCATION FACILITY DESIGNATION in order to provide clear and actionable guidance for safe operations through the prevention, early detection and control of COVID-19 in schools and other educational facilities.

According to recent university studies, 4 in 5 students will prefer to study in a certified COVID-19 safe university above any other consideration and 6 out of 10 members of the academic and non-academic staff are also more interested in serving in a certified education facility that was monitored as Covid=19 safe.

In order to answer these needs and concerns the European Tourism Academy has made available his guidance and certification process, while specific to countries that have already confirmed the transmission of COVID-19, is still relevant in all other contexts.

European Tourism Academy considers that education can encourage students to become advocates for disease prevention and control at home, in school, and in their community by talking to others about how to prevent the spread of viruses.

Basic principles
Following basic principles can help keep students, teachers, and staff safe at school and help stop the spread of this disease.

Recommendations for healthy universities are:

• Sick students, teachers and other staff should not come to school
• Schools should enforce regular hand washing with safe water and soap, alcohol rub/hand sanitizer or chlorine solution and, at a minimum, daily disinfection and cleaning of school surfaces
• Schools should provide water, sanitation and waste management facilities and follow
environmental cleaning and decontamination procedures

Ensure safe universities/school operations:

Update or develop school emergency and contingency plans. Work with officials to guarantee schools are not used as shelters, treatment units, etc.
Reinforce frequent handwashing and sanitation and procure needed supplies.

Prepare and maintain handwashing stations with soap and water, and if possible, place alcohol-based hand rub (hand sanitizers) in each classroom, at entrances and exits, and near lunchrooms and toilets.

Clean and disinfect school buildings, classrooms and especially water and sanitation facilities at least once a day, particularly surfaces that are touched by many people (railings, lunch tables, sports equipment, door and window handles, toys, teaching and learning aids etc.)

Implement social distancing practices.

Adapt university/school policies where appropriate

Develop flexible attendance and sick leave policies that encourage students and staff to stay home when sick or when caring for sick family members.

Discourage the use of perfect attendance awards and incentives.

Identify critical job functions and positions, and plan for alternative coverage by crosstraining staff.

Plan for possible academic calendar changes, particularly in relation to breaks and exams.

Monitor school attendance

Implement school absenteeism monitoring systems to track student and staff absence and compare
against usual absenteeism patterns at the school.

Plan for continuity of learning

In the case of absenteeism/sick leave or temporary school closures, support continued access to
quality education. This can include:
• Use of online/e-learning strategies
• Assigning reading and exercises for home study
• Radio, podcast or television broadcasts of academic content
• Assigning teachers to conduct remote daily or weekly follow up with students
• Review/develop accelerated education strategies

Implement targeted Covid-19 health education
Integrate disease prevention and control in daily activities and lessons.

CHECKLIST FOR EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS AND STAFF

☐ 1. Promote and demonstrate regular hand washing and positive hygiene behaviors and
monitor their uptake. Ensure adequate, clean and separate toilets for girls and boys
o Ensure soap and safe water is available at age-appropriate hand washing
stations
o Encourage frequent and thorough washing (at least 20 seconds)
o Place hand sanitizers in toilets, classrooms, halls, and near exits where
possible
o Ensure adequate, clean and separate toilets or latrines for girls and boys
☐ 2. Clean and disinfect school buildings, classrooms and especially water and sanitation
facilities at least once a day, particularly surfaces that are touched by many people
(railings, lunch tables, sports equipment, door and window handles, toys, teaching
and learning aids etc.)
o Use sodium hypochlorite at 0.5% (equivalent 5000ppm) for disinfecting
surfaces and 70% ethyl alcohol for disinfection of small items, and ensure
appropriate equipment for cleaning staff
☐ 3. Increase air flow and ventilation where climate allows (open windows, use air
conditioning where available, etc.)
☐ 4. Post signs encouraging good hand and respiratory hygiene practices
☐ 5. Ensure trash is removed daily and disposed of safely

European Tourism Academy is supporting and verifying the implementation of these measures and Covid -19 prevention action plan and certifying the complying institution by awarding the COVID-19 SAFE UNIVERSITY/ CERTIFIED EDUCATION FACILITY DESIGNATION as the only internationally recognized seal of excellence in hygiene measure and Covid-19 prevention in the educational sector.

DISCOVER THE COVID-19 SAFE AIRLINES RECEIVING THE SAFE AND TRUSTED AIRLINE FOR COVID-19 PREVENTION SEAL

THE CERTIFICATION FOR SAFE AND TRUSTED AIRLINE FOR COVID-19 PREVENTION: the future of the airline industry?

How many of us miss the rituals of flying, from the bing-bong of the seat belt sign to binge-watching films on the in-flight entertainment system?

Despite mass vaccination programmes around the world gaining pace and talk of quarantine-free holidays, the prospect of traveling internationally still feels remote for most of us.

And when we do return to the skies, some of us will likely be feeling anxious about being strapped into the enclosed confines of an aircraft cabin for prolonged periods.

While many airlines have revised their schedules or grounded some of their fleets due to the ongoing impact of coronavirus, there have still been flights operating across the globe throughout the pandemic.

It’s partially this experience of keeping their aircraft in the air that has led many airlines to develop and adopt stringent safety measures to limit the potential spread of the virus. And, more importantly, make the travelling public feel safe and at ease enough to enjoy flying again in the near future.

EUROPEAN TOURISM ACADEMY RECOMMENDS: OBTAIN THE SAFE AND TRUSTED AIRLINE CERTIFICATION IN ORDER TO BETTER SERVE YOUR CUSTOMERS

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

So, how are airlines going about it?

Carrying out in-depth on-site surveys to access just that, the global tourism institution-EUROPEAN COUNCIL ON TOURISM AND TRADE has introduced the first – and so far only – COVID-19 safety certification which is rapidly becoming an industry benchmark. Here’s what the EUROPEAN COUNCIL ON TOURISM AND TRADE looked for.

How are airlines keeping us safe in the sky?

Sitting in close quarters with up to 300 others on an average long-haul flight (or even up to 644 passengers in an Airbus A380) during a global pandemic is enough to make even the bravest of us jittery.

Part of keeping us safe in the air is inherent in the design of modern aircraft.

The plane’s engines help to pump fresh air from outside to recycle and replace stale air inside the cabin every two to three minutes, meaning that there is a new supply of fresh air around 20 times every hour on average.

Modern aircraft are also fitted with filters similar to those in hospitals which help to clean the air of particles as minute as COVID-19, making it arguably one of the safest places to be.

Aircraft design aside, airlines have also adopted certain protocols on board as part of the new routine of flying, including mandatory mask-wearing, blocking out middle seats and providing sanitary kits for use during your flight.

Of course, safety measures aren’t just in place for onboard your flight.

They often begin from the moment you set foot outside the terminal building at most airports.

It’s these measures, too, that EUROPEAN COUNCIL ON TOURISM AND TRADE has taken a keen interest in when it comes to accessing passenger safety.

What are airlines judged on?

EUROPEAN COUNCIL ON TOURISM AND TRADE is carrying for the beneficiaries airlines an eight to ten days audit on the airline internal and international routes to scrutinise for WHO and ECTT  hygiene and safety recommended measures.

The certification is based on how consistently each airline has stuck to its own measures and the effectiveness of each health and safety protocol it has introduced since the start of the pandemic.

These include the use of protective screens and PPE by staff at the airport and onboard flights, social distancing measures, clear signage, the availability of hand sanitiser and replacement masks, cleaning measures and so on.

Over 20 airlines have applied to be reviewed by the EUROPEAN COUNCIL ON TOURISM AND TRADE so far or are awaiting their final certification.

TOME HRISTOSKI: THE MAYOR WHO BROUGHT KRUSHEVO TO LIFE!

The city of Krusevo has recently become a center of tourism development and international recognition for Macedonia.

The city boasts on its rich history being connected with the short-lived, ill-fated, but glorious Ilindend uprising and 10 days Krusevo Republic.

Krusevo: a city that has started a new life!

Lavishly preserved churches and monasteries are surrounding the city, transforming it into a beacon of religion and traditional art.

And is practically a trope to remember the city as the funeral repository of the body of Nikola Karev, the Macedonian Republic’s first president.

Tome Hristoski: the mayor who put Krusevo back on the global map!

Always surrounded by children as it`s building for the future.

The present-day administration lead by Mayor Tome Hristoski has started building on these cultural and historical bases by refurbishing the Ilinden Museum and Museum of National Liberation Struggle and supporting the updating of Makedonium Museum, Foundry Musem and creating the Ilinden Park as an ethno-city center drawing energy and recognition from the regional ethnic melting-pot and a string of famed celebrations such as: 10 days of the Krusevo Republic, Transfiguration celebrations, Vlah Festivals, Blagorodnita-celebrations of the Holy Mother of God etc.

Mayor  Tome Hristoski had also put a bet on developing the city tourism not only on cultural, ethnographic, and historical riches but also as a winter sports centre.

Snow, perfect ski lanes, and cable cars are creating an appealing offer for tourists choosing Krusevo as a winter sports destination.

The tourism development strategy of  Krusevo Municipality received a brilliant endorsement by the city recognized as a SAFE TOURIST DESTINATION!

Recently the Krusevo Municipality was recognized by European Council on Tourism and Trade as the first city in Macedonia to be registered for two years as a SAFE TOURIST DESTINATION during the Covid-19 pandemic for GOOD PRACTICES AND HYGIENE in combating Covid-19.

This seal of excellence is destined to bring relaxation to tourists and to support tourism development as recent studies showed that 80% of tourists choose only certified safe destinations during pandemics.

The certification comes in the heels of older administration preoccupations on the field of public health with generous initiatives of Mayor  Tome Hristoski like the free distribution of masks, gloves and sanitary products necessary for combating and controlling diseases in the area.

Today Krusevo is blending in an attractive manner the fabulous historical troves of the past with a dynamic and vibrant city future-oriented and respectful of the urban tradition of cultural mixing and openness.

In the words of Mayor Tome Hristoski: The Krusevo that we want to build is young and prosperous, but with respect for the past generation and their role.

We inherited a city central to Macedonian history and we ambition to continue our role in shaping Macedonia’s future.

With such powerful and efficient leaders, Krusevo is promising to continue his rise among the models’ cities in Macedonia and the Balkans.

KRUSHEVO BECOMES MACEDONIA`S FIRST RECOGNIZED COVID-19 SAFE TOURIST DESTINATION

KRUSHEVO BECOMES MACEDONIA`S FIRST RECOGNIZED COVID-19 SAFE TOURIST DESTINATION

In recognition of Krushevo`s city administration efforts to align with global standards for health, safety and hygiene, the city has been awarded the right to use, for a period of two years, the Safe Destination Certification, from the global tourism institution-European Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT).

Created in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ECTT`s Safe Tourist Destination enables tourists to recognize destinations that meet international standards for health and safety, allowing visitors to confidently enjoy safe destinations.

The EUROPEAN COUNCIL ON TOURISM AND TRADE Department for COVID-19 Certification said these are awarded so that travelers can recognize governments and businesses that have adopted global health standard protocols.

Tourism Director Mr. Radu Alexandru led the paperwork and inspection-related tasks leading to the ceremonial awarding for the city of Krusevo which was duly inspected and endorsed by the regional offices concerned.

Mayor of the historical city of Krusevo Mr. Tome Hristoski received the SAFE TOURIST DESTINATION CERTIFICATION crowning his city achievements in combating COVID-19 and ensuring a safe environment for tourists coming to this beautiful part of Macedonia.

The guide on: How to apply for safe travels stamp

Dr. Radu Alexandru said that while this travel stamp of approval is not required, he encouraged other cities and establishments to apply.

Interested cities in the region can apply for safe travel and destination certification by submitting a letter of intent and application form, and city logo while destinations include the local government unit profile, health and safety-related issuances/ordinances and destination logo.

“This surge of interest is reflective of different cities and regions readiness to adapt to the new normal and desire to be globally recognized as a fun and ‘safe destination’ facility,” he added.

The mayor’s office in  Krusevo: the first establishment to receive the CLEAN and SAFE-SEAL for GOOD PRACTICES IN COMBATING COVID-19 CERTIFICATION.

Dr. Radu Alexandru said that as the countries of the world are reopening to foreign tourists, they need to prioritize the restoration of travelers’ confidence.

“We anticipate that parallel initiatives across the globe will hasten the resumption of international travel,” the tourism certification chief said.

“As early as now, we need to prepare our facilities and destinations to be visitor-ready, with health and safety as key concerns.

The ECTT safe destination certification for diverse cities, on top of our accreditation, will hope to restore travelers’ confidence in different zones of Macedonia as a ‘safe and fun’ destinations” he added.

HOTEL CERTIFICATION! THE ONLY FUTURE FOR TOURISM INDUSTRY POST-COVID-19

HOTEL CERTIFICATION! THE ONLY FUTURE FOR TOURISM INDUSTRY POST-COVID-19

Since the beginning of the pandemic, global hospitality industry and hoteliers have mobilized to fight the Covid-19.

For the hotels, this has meant imagining a new way of operating so that their guests’ stay is 100% safe.

Under the supervision of the EUROPEAN COUNCIL ON TOURISM AND TRADE and EUROPEAN TOURISM ACADEMY, this process was initiated with an analysis of what was being done in other countries, but also with the search for new technologies, obtaining new health products, and achieving new behaviors both for the staff of the establishments and for future customers.

As a result of this process of carving safety nets for tourism developing in post-covid era, the global tourism institutions had developed  THE CERTIFICATION FOR GOOD PRACTICES IN COMBATING COVID-19/SARS COV-2 -COVID-19 FREE HOTEL DESIGNATION, a comprehensive program to secure healthy environments for the benefit of visitors and locals.

This certificate is based on World Health Organization guide for hotels and tourism industry in combating COVID-19 and has become an international model created to prevent the spread of infections and to provide health certainty to the tourism sector and its different actors, inspiring confidence in visitors while protecting the health of travelers around the globe.

The program, designed with sustainability and social responsibility in mind, was created with the support and supervision of EUROPEAN TOURISM ACADEMY, other academic institutions and international organizations.

It takes into account current scientific information, POSI (Prevention of Spread of Infections) procedures, international recommendations and quality tourism programs such as ECTT Travel Safe Programme and
sustainable care protocols in adapted to COVID-19 in tourist centers that were issued by the ministries of tourism in Europe.

In its first stage, the programme has registered 500 hotels and tourism entities across the globe that are trained and directed towards the completion and obtaining GOOD PRACTICES IN COMBATING COVID-19/SARS COV-2 CERTIFICATION-COVID-19 FREE HOTEL DESIGNATION.

“Tourism has dramatically changed since this pandemic episode,” said Dr. Sorin Preda, in a virtual presentation on the program for members of the global tourism industry.

“In this new stage of Tourism Post-COVID, the certainty that we can offer visitors by implementing the best sanitary practices in the destination will play a fundamental role in travel decisions.”

The new certification considers several processes, including creation of documents, training of verifying personnel, launching the registration system, analysis of verifications, validation of implemented processes and proving documents of the registered company, and online training for tourism companies and employees in order to obtain GOOD PRACTICES IN COMBATING COVID-19/SARS COV-2 CERTIFICATION (COVID-19 FREE HOTEL DESIGNATION) issued by the European Council on Tourism and Trade with a two-year validity.

To obtain the certificate, it is mandatory for each company to create a Covid -19 Crisis Management Team responsible for transmitting information to the organization and to have proof that the Crisis Management Team has taken part in the training seminars and complies with 85% of the control points established in the checklist while presenting the corresponding documents showing proof and requested on the audit visit.

The certification methodology was endorsed by the European Tourism Academy with the support of experts certified byECTT.

The quality and depth of the program allow its easy adjustment to international certificates and existing federal programs.

Among the reasons for crowning the city as a world cultural and touristic hub the European Council on Tourism and Tradeenumerated the existence of a vast array of historically and religiously monuments like the former imperial palace hosting today the Ethnographic Museum, the Entoto enclose of Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu , the cathedrals of Saint George, Holy Trinity, Medhame Alem –the largest cathedral in Ethiopia and the second in Africa etc.

By this recognition of Addis Ababa as WORLD CAPITAL OF CULTURE AND TOURISM, the capital city of Ethiopia is added on the world`s list of cities leading humanity into development and using culture and tourism as fundamentals for a better life.

The global tourism institution ECTTremarked in the official statement that: Addis Ababa is blending his position, in one of the most beautiful regions in the world, with an extraordinary potential of culture and history patrimony, becoming a true world treasure and without a doubt, one of the most impressive areas of Africa.

Addis Ababa can capitalize on the city status as World Capital of Culture and Tourism creating special tourism offers and touristic routes in the city and his adjacent territory (like the Blue Nile Falls, Lake Tana etc.) in order to retain a growing number of tourists in the city.

With Ethiopian Airlines growth and more than 10 million travelers expected to pass through Addis Ababa an important part of these tourists could be attracted to spend at least one or two nights in the city bringing a substantial revenue into the city.

The decision of European Council on Tourism and Trade marks the end of a negative period in Ethiopian tourism and restarts the process to promote Ethiopia as a safe, tourist-oriented and perfect destination for the culture and adventure loving tourists.
